ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME:
State-of-the-Art 2006

Up Objectives Schedule Faculty

OBJECTIVES

Differentiate "pulmonary" from "extra-pulmonary" causes of ARDS and explain the clinical significance.

Describe the mechanism by which mechanical ventilation may contribute to the development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.

Outline a protective ventilation strategy for minimizing ventilator-induced lung injury.

Contrast pressure control ventilation with pressure-regulated volume control.

Explain the concept of autoflow in mechanical ventilation, and explain its clinical benefits.

Describe the physiologic benefits of maintained spontaneous breathing in ARDS.

Discuss airway pressure release ventilation.

Explain the physiologic basis for improved oxygenation associated with prone positioning in ARDS.

Review recent research findings relevant to surfactant therapy, and explain why it is not currently recommended for use as routine therapy in adults with ARDS.
