INTRODUCTION
The SCIENCE of NURSING is based on
physiology, pathophysiology and research. It is essential for critical care nurses to have
a firm foundation in each of these areas.
Using a CASE STUDY APPROACH, this seminar will explore, in cellular
detail, the pathophysiology behind some of the more complicated problems in critical care
today. Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), the mechanism of bleeding and treatment
options, hemodynamic drug therapies, and trauma resuscitation principles all will be
discussed.
The emphasis will be on advanced physiology, pharmacology and assessment strategies. This
complex information will be related to bedside problem-solving and will allow participants
to advance their clinical abilities. The ART of NURSING is to apply the SCIENCE to the
care of the critically ill. This seminar will address both the SCIENCE and the ART of
NURSING.
