NEUROSCIENCE CASE STUDIES:
Learning from Our Past

Current Seminars Seminars By Date Seminars By Region Schedule Faculty

INTRODUCTION

This program will explore the development of neuroscience knowledge using the clinical case study format. The key case studies that are universally accepted as foundations in neurology will be discussed, as will newer case studies.

The material presented will include pertinent neuroanatomy and neurophysiology related to prehospital, acute hospital, and post-hospitalization care. The program is designed to provide a strong foundation for understanding the roots of scientific developments in neuroscience and relate that foundation to current paradigms of care.

Nurses who provide care to patients throughout the continuum of care will benefit.

The objectives for this one-day program includes:

Describe the development of the concept of "the brain" through written history.

Discuss early neuroanatomy and the discovery of regions within the brain.

List the specific areas of the brain as anatomical regions.

Define the primary function of each of the lobes within the brain.

Discuss the role of neurotransmitters in brain injury and recovery.

Differentiate between the types of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke.

Discuss the different approaches to providing nursing care to patients with brain injury.

List the different types of diabetes insipidus.

Define the role of multimodal neurologic monitoring.

List methods and tools for nursing assessment of level of sedation.

Discuss the role of thermoregulation in the care of neurologically injured patients.
