RENAL CRITICAL CARE:
Principles and Practice

Current Seminars Seminars By Date Seminars By Region Objectives Schedule Faculty

INTRODUCTION

Renal physiology is a fascinating topic and one with broad clinical application in the critical care setting. Because of the kidney's central role in the maintenance of homeostasis, alterations in renal function can produce life-threatening consequences.

Electrolyte imbalances are especially likely, making accurate interpretation of laboratory data an essential skill for expert clinicians.

Target Audience:

This seminar offers a unique opportunity for experienced critical care nurses to expand and solidify their knowledge base in this important and challenging area.

Examples of Questions to be answered:

What is the role of BNP (B-type natriuretic factor) in the kidney and vasculature?

What is the role of prostaglandins in the kidney and how do NSAIDs and the COX-II inhibitors affect renal blood flow?

Is an elevated BUN:creatinine always associated with volume depletion?

How can the urine be a dark color, yet be dilute (low specific gravity and osmolality)?

Why is the "Diuretic Phase" of ATN an outdated term?

Can inhaled albuterol be used to treat hyperkalemia?

What are the three electrolyte imbalances that enhance the effects of digitalis?

What are two causes of refractory hypokalemia?

What three electrolyte imbalances can cause Torsades de Pointes?

What is the relationship of hypophosphatemia to ventilator dependence?

What is the relationship between arterial pH and the ionized calcium?

IV insulin can be used to treat three electrolyte imbalances. What are they?

Why should sodium bicarbonate infusions be mixed in a hypotonic solution, e.g. D5W or 0.45% saline?

What is the life-threatening complication of excessive magnesium?

What is the difference in calcium chloride and calcium gluconate?
